A new name, and notes on extra-floral nectaries, in Lagunaria (Malvaceae, Malvoideae) Naturalis
Craven, L.A.; Miller, C.; White, R.G..
The Australian taxon Lagunaria patersonius subsp. bracteata is raised to specific rank as L. queenslandica, based upon morphological and ecological dissimilarities between it and the autonymic taxon, L. patersonius subsp. patersonius. The latter taxon occurs on the southwest Pacific Ocean islands, Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands. Extra-floral nectaries are reported in Lagunaria, apparently for the first time, and contrasted with those occurring in species of Hibiscus sections Bombicella and Furcaria.

Alterations in biochemical components in mesta plants infected with yellow vein mosaic disease Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Chatterjee,Arpita; Ghosh,Subrata K..
Yellow vein mosaic disease of mesta (kenaf, Hibiscus cannabinus L.; and roselle, H. sabdariffa L.) is a new entrant to the disease scenario and it is associated with a novel monopartite Begomovirus. Changes in different biochemical parameters in diseased mesta plants were observed as compared to healthy ones. Isozyme pattern and assays of different enzymes, namely catalase, acid phosphatase, peroxidase, esterase, polyphenol oxidase and superoxide dismutase, revealed lower activities of catalase, acid phosphatase and peroxidase enzymes and enhanced activities of esterase, polyphenol oxidase and superoxide dismutase in diseased plants as compared to healthy ones. Due to the infection, chlorophyll content, phenolics and total soluble protein decreased whereas...

Viral neuraminidase inhibitors are widely used as synthetic anti-influenza drugs for the prevention and treatment of influenza. However, drug-resistant influenza A virus variants, including H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs), have been reported. Therefore, the discovery of novel and effective antiviral agents is warranted. We screened the antiviral effects of 11 herbal tea extracts (hibiscus, black tea, tencha, rosehip tea, burdock tea, green tea, jasmine tea, ginger tea, lavender tea, rose tea and oak tea) against the H5N1 HPAIV in vitro. Among the tested extracts, only the hibiscus extract and its fractionated extract (frHibis) highly and rapidly reduced the titers of all H5 HPAIVs and low pathogenic AIVs (LPAIVs) used in the...

Leaf margin serration and its taxonomical significance in the genus Hibiscus Phyton
Bhat,RB.
Types of leaf margin serration were investigated in ten species of the genus Hibiscus. Types and frequency of serration varied widely from species to species, from common to occasional to rare. Leaf serration is an important taxonomical feature in Hibiscus.

The Hibiscus panduriformis complex (Malvaceae) in Australia Naturalis
Juswara, L.S.; Craven, L.A..
The Hibiscus panduriformis Burm.f. species complex in Australia is revised. Six species are recognised, of which one is the widespread H. panduriformis; one, H. austrinus, is based upon H. panduriformis var. australis; and four represent new species, H. apodus, H. calcicola, H. fluvialis, and H. multilobatus. A new variety is recognised in H. austrinus, namely var. occidentalis. Distribution maps are provided for all taxa and an exsiccatae list is included.
